A brief discussion on Mesothelioma and survival rates of mesothelioma in 2021

Mesothelioma survival rates improve

as diagnosed patients live longer.

May 9 A milestone has been reached

in the fight against an aggressive

form of cancer

with new data showing

more patients surviving for longer.

The average life expectancy of large

national study showed

that mesothelioma patients are living

more than a year longer than

they were five years ago and the

rate of survival has

more than doubled

over the 15-year period.

Researchers at Columbia University

in New York

analyzed more than

2.7 million mesothelioma cases

nationwide and found that the average

age at

diagnosis rose to 72 in 2011 from

66.5 in 1993.

Survival rose to 17.8 months

from 6.4 months

during the

same time frame.

The most recent data available,

released in 2009,

showed a 5.1 month improvement

in overall survival for

patients diagnosed in 2003

compared to 1993, when the

average

survival time was 13.5 months.

While the mesothelioma patient

population has also improved,

there

is an alarming shortage of

mesothelioma doctors,

especially at facilities

that treat brain cancer.

"It's not easy to identify mesothelioma

patients in a

timely fashion," Lieber said.

"It has to be based on

medical history, diagnosis,

the patients' circumstances. We need

threshold for determining the mesothelioma patient population: if a person survived for less than one year after diagnosis, then the patient is likely to live at least a year after diagnosis.

"This underscores the importance of doctors evaluating the patients' overall health," said Lieber.

But, he noted that the patients who live longest are those who have recently been diagnosed, or whose mesothelioma was diagnosed in a localized area.

Lieber also said that if patients delay getting treatment, it can delay their survival and make them more susceptible to other illnesses.

The study's authors identified two factors that improved patients' chances of survival: patients who were treated as outpatients and those who received chemotherapy, whether the treatment was delivered in a hospital or outpatient setting.

While chemotherapy did have a positive effect on survival for outpatients, it appeared to have no effect on how long patients survived if they received their treatment in a hospital.

Still, Lieber said that chemotherapy might be used by patients with localized mesothelioma when doctors feel that patients can tolerate the treatment in the hospital.

"The study highlights the importance of early diagnosis and aggressive treatment," said Dr. Barbara Levy, director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

"It also shows us that there are very few physicians in the United States that are certified to do the treatment of mesothelioma," Levy said.

Mesothelioma is one of the most common cancers among people who have served in the Navy and Marine Corps, with some estimates suggesting that close to 400,000 people have the cancer.

Despite advances in the detection and treatment of the cancer, the number of deaths among veterans have not decreased much, according to researchers.
